Written Pulpit on the Topic of Arbaeen

The number forty (Arbaeen) holds a special place in Islamic, mystical, social, and even historical culture. From the maturity of prophets at the age of forty, and the recommendation to pray for forty believers, to the tradition of memorizing forty hadiths and nutritional values, all emphasize the significance of this number. In the history of the Iranian Revolution as well, Arbaeen gatherings played a pivotal role in sustaining the people’s movement. In this context, the Arbaeen pilgrimage of Imam Hussein (AS) is considered a sign of faith and Shi’a identity.

The prophets reached prophethood at the age of forty. We have people who, when they reach forty, more is expected from them. In the narrations, there are many hadiths about forty. In social matters, it is said: forty houses in every direction are considered neighbors. In mystical practices, it is said: if you pray for forty believers, your own prayer will also be answered. In nutrition, it is said: if you have no money for forty days to buy meat, borrow and buy meat; do not let your body go without meat for more than forty days. In cultural matters: whoever memorizes forty useful hadiths will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment with the scholars, with the jurists. I do not know what the secret of this Arbaeen is. In our revolution, the elderly remember, but the youth do not. In fact, the secret of our revolution was forty after forty. On 19 Dey, some were martyred in Qom; forty days later, in Tabriz, it became a revolution. Forty of Tabriz became Yazd, forty of Yazd became Babol and Amol, and so on. Each province gave martyrs, and the other province held the Arbaeen. These Arbaeens connected together, and became a river that expelled the Shah. The visitation of Imam Hussein on Arbaeen is important; it is a sign of faith, just as wearing an agate ring on the right hand is a sign of being Shia.
